But in the overwhelming majority of cases, monochrome lasers offer the lower total cost of ownership.
Xerox prices the color ink for its Phaser 8860 Color Printer so that printing any given page in color will cost the same as printing it in black and white. Not only is the initial price lower, but it costs less to print a given page in monochrome than in color. One last benefit of monochrome lasers is that they cost less than equivalent color lasers-with equivalence defined by speed, output quality, and paper handling. And given that the final product-a black and white page-isn't really comparable to a color page, you can't treat the speeds as comparable either. Printing the same image in black and white takes less time than printing it in color, because the color information itself translates to far more data to process. If you compare speeds among printers in the accompanying performance table, keep in mind that although the comparisons are appropriate, because they reflect the speeds you'll see in real-world use, it's not quite fair to compare monochrome laser speed for color pages to color laser or inkjet speed. (The fastest monochrome laser we've tested to date is rated at 55 ppm.) Even among inexpensive monochrome lasers, few are rated at less than 20 pages per minute(ppm). One thing you can certainly count on from a monochrome laser is speed. The ranges for monochrome laser-rated duty cycles and recommended monthly maximums are similar to the ranges for color lasers, with recommended maximums ranging from a few hundred pages to well over 10,000 pages. Most significantly, output options, including stackers that can create multiple stacks of pages, sorters to sort the pages into different output trays, and finishers to staple documents or punch holes, are more widely available for monochrome lasers than for any other kind of printer. Built-in duplexers to print on both sides of a page are common. Maximum paper capacities can be as little as 100 sheets or more than 4,000 sheets. Of all the different kinds of printers, monochrome lasers offer the greatest range of choices for paper handling. A few aren't quite up to the level you'd probably want for a newsletter, but almost all can print recognizable images from photos on Web pages. The moral: If graphics matter, pick your printer carefully.įor photos, almost all monochrome lasers print at what's best described as newspaper quality-good enough for printing documents like Web pages or client newsletters with photos, but no better. That said, the graphics quality for a large minority of monochrome lasers is poor enough to give you second thoughts about including the graphics in, say, a report for an important client. Graphics quality in most cases is good enough for any internal business use, including things like PowerPoint handouts. You can expect the same crisp, clean edges, and here again, with rare exceptions, you'll get highly readable, well-formed text at sizes as small as four points. Monochrome lasers deliver the same high-quality text as color lasers, usually at faster speeds for a given price printer. Prices start at well below $200 for a single-function printer, and a little less than $250 for an AIO. It's a little harder, but still possible, to find an all-in-one (AIO) that's small enough to fit comfortably on a desk too. It's easy to find a single function mono laser that's small enough to fit on your desk without dominating your desktop.
